What are Hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are enlarged veins in the walls of the lower rectum and the tissues surrounding the anus. They usually occur when the muscles around the anorectal area can no longer massage the veins. As a result, there is a slowing of blood flow back to the heart and stagnant blood backs up into the veins, creating hemorrhoids.
Hemorrhoids are common in both men and women and affect both sexes equally. In 2003, Hemorrhoids was the most commonly reported digestive disorder. By age 50, about half the population will have hemorrhoids. Of these cases, over 10 to 20% of hemorrhoid suffers will require some form of surgery.
Hemorrhoids are present in healthy individuals. They become noticeable and generally cause symptoms when the hemorrhoids become enlarged, inflamed, thrombosed, or prolapsed.
There are 2 main types of hemorrhoids: external and internal. Hemorrhoids that originate above the dentate line are internal hemorrhoids, even if they enlarge further down the rectum, below the dentate line. ?Hemorrhoids that originate below the dentate line are external hemorrhoids. (The dentate line is a line within the anal canal that denotes the transition from anal skin (anoderm) to the lining of the rectum). The treatment for external and internal hemorrhoids can be different but the Peristal can be used for both external hemorrhoids and internal hemorrhoids in grades 1 and 2.
Internal hemorrhoids have 4 degrees/grades of severity. The Peristal can be used for mild to moderate hemorrhoids, ie stages 1 and 2.
|1||The hemorrhoid does not stick out from the anus. There may be annoying itching or pain in the area. Mild distention (enlargement); Some anal bleeding noticed, probably indirect in stool or on toilet paper.||Peristal Compatible|
|2||Prolapsed (bulge out) with bowel movement, spontaneously reduce (go back into rectum).||Peristal Compatible|
|3||Prolapsed with bowel movement, must be manually reduced (pushed back in).||Peristal Incompatible|
|4||Prolapsed, cannot be pushed back in and the hemorrhoid becomes a permanent protrusion. The rectal mucosa (inner lining) also starts to prolapse.||Peristal Incompatible|
Fourth-degree hemorrhoids also include hemorrhoids that are thrombosed (containing blood clots) or that pull much of the lining of the rectum through the anus. Peristal Incompatible
Note: Bleeding hemorrhoids are not unusual, but you should still see your doctor if you notice that any rectal bleeding seems to last more than only a short time (a few days). This is because anal bleeding can be symptomatic of much more serious diseases.
The Peristal is designed as an exercise plan. Thus, it should be used even when there are no outbreaks of hemorrhoids and it can be used during minor to moderate hemorrhoids. However, the Peristal should NOT be used when your muscles are extremely sensitive, such as during major hemorrhoid flare-ups (ie... hemorrhoids in stage 3 or 4).
What is Incontinence?
Urinary incontinence (UI) afflicts more than 17 million people in the United States. It is one of our ten most common chronic medical conditions & afflicts people of all ages. Unfortunately, many people do not seek treatment even though options are available. UI affects 20-30% of adults over 60 and a primary factor in admission to nursing homes. UI can also lead directly to other medical problems and significantly decreases one's quality of life.
Why is Muscle Toning Important?
Many people do not know that the anal rectal area contains a wealth of nerve endings and muscles. As a result, most people do not usually exercise their anal rectal PC-sphincter muscles. Nevertheless, like most other muscles in your body, your anal rectal PC-sphincter muscles need regular exercise and toning to stay healthy. The Peristal is specifically designed for toning those muscles and is very effective in building muscle tone, generating circulation, and rejuvenating your entire lower body system.
